Word Power

If you ever came across these questions in your mind, here are the answers from the expert to help you out.

A comma before 'and'?

Examples of two different usage of commas:
1.The food sold in the canteen includes fried noodles, fried rice, noodle soup and
sandwiches.
2.Food served at the party included sandwiches, hot dogs, spaghetti, and fried
noodles.

Answer:

In British English, the comma is usually omitted before the "and" separating the last two items in a list or series, as in the sentence No.1.
However,if this items are long, a comma is usually used,e.g. "The food sold in the canteen includes fried noodles, fried rice, noodle soup with prawns, and toasted tuna sandwiches."
This means the sentence No.2 quite acceptable.

Plural after no?

Example: 'Chelsea have no plans to sell or buy'-adapted from the front-page headline of a newspaper.

Answer:

When there is "no" before a countable noun, the plural form of the noun is generally used unless the context makes it necessary to use a singular noun, e.g.

1."She had no mother to look after her."(We can have only one mother)

2."Are you looking for a boy? There are no boys in this hostel."

3."There were absolutely no taxis on the road!"

The process of teaching and learning...it starts from home

When a child is born into this world, they bring happiness in the family. Apart from that, their born actually increase the responsibilities of the parents where they have lots of planning on how to bring their child up. Their responsibilities includes in providing basic needs for living such as food, home, clothes. But there is something more than that to be considered as essential to raise them into a well- mannered human in the future. If you could make a random guess, it is none other than providing a good education. So, parents should already think for their children's education in the very early stage and we are not talking about savings here. It’s more than that, where parents should be well aware that education or in the more appropriate word, learning and teaching process in every children actually takes place from the home itself. So, today let’s look at how the process takes place and also what parents should avoid in raising child. Here are also some suggestions given, which may be helpful in raising your children.

DON’T:

Parents should never use any harsh or inappropriate languages in front of their children. The reason is children learn everything from parents and from what they see and hear around them. As children grow, they happen to make their parents as an idol and tend to follow them. These kids are considered as young learners have a great tendency in picking up a language double as fast as an adult can learn. So be careful of what is coming out from your mouth. If you speak harsh words, don’t be surprised if you hear your children to speak the same way though they don’t really know the meaning those words carry.

Suggestion :

Get yourself used with polite language and if possible try to speak other languages instead of sticking to your mother tongue. As I mentioned before, at young age, children have the ability to learn more than one language at one time as it is also known as critical period. Not only that, they tend come up well with the languages with practice and repetition. So, let say your mother tongue is Chinese, why not you try speaking with them in English apart from the native language? It is proven that child who speaks more than one language or what we call them as bilingual, tends to have a better intellectual compared to those who are monolingual.

DON’T :

Nowadays, most parents with profession choose to send their children to childcare centers as they don’t have the time to take care of them. Though from the view of the parents, the act of sending their children to childcare centers is helpful, but actually it brings disadvantages to the growing process of a child. From my point of view, a child grows best when they are with parents and the parent can see on how their child grows in front of their eyes. However, when children grows in others' hand, it is difficult for you to have a bond with them as you spend little time with them and they get less attention and care. Sometimes, this may led a child to feel lonely and they become more passive which may affect their growth and learning process in the future. Parents otherwise, would not know the needs and the problems faced by their children.

Suggestion :

Instead of sending your children to childcare, why not you let them grow with your parents? I believe that it is better to let them raised by their grandparents if you look into the bond, love, care and security your child may get. There should not be any place to question or doubt if grandparents can raise your children well. If you think they have raised you well, there shouldn’t be any worries then. Furthermore, they are much more experienced in handling children’s behavior.

DON’T :

Do not restrict children not to do anything or control them too much. Give them chance to learn from mistakes and experience. However by doing this, don’t think that you are giving them too much freedom until it creates a worry in you if they might get themselves into harm. So, here comes your responsibility as parents to guide your child and not to teach them. If you teach, know that children are very curious when it comes to learning a new thing. What will happen later is, they will question you back and you have to get yourself prepared with the answers that can satisfy them. So, if you ask your child not to do something, explain to them why they shouldn’t. But don’t try too hard as children learn best from experience.

Suggestion :

Most importantly, let your children to move about freely and let them do what they want. Join with your children and learn to grow with them as they can teach you many things in many ways. Give children an opportunity to expose their creativity. For example, do not scold your children if get themselves dirty with paints. You must know that, this is the time for them to learn to draw and not to learn about hygiene.

DON’T :

Do not show your weakness in front of your children. For them, you are the best person in the world until they have the ability to accept the minus points in you. Show them the right way to learn things around them. If you expect children to keep themselves or everything clean, why not you instill the habit in you first?

Suggestion :

Change yourself if you want your children to change and changes should come from home first. So, let go some of your bad habits if you don’t want them to follow those habits.

Last but not least, raising a child is not an easy job. So, act now on how to raise your children and don’t wait until they learn everything in school. Parents should know that children nowadays are very advance in learning things. Start it from home, at their early stage as learning and teaching is a continuous process.

So, you guys out there, do you think that teaching and learning starts from home? How far do you think that the thoughts shared are true? Do feel free to share with us...your suggestions are most welcomed.Tq
